Description
Madhubani art or Mithila art was originated during the time of epic Ramayana, when the King Janaka ruled Mithila (now a part of Bihar,India)The story of wedding goes like this..........It was centuries back...photography and videography were unknown...so King Janaka commissioned artisans of Mithila to paint various scenes of marriage ceremony of his beloved daughter Sita !
When King Janaka arranged for Swayamvara (The custom of bride choosing her groom )a large crowd of eligible princes came even from far away lands to try their luck.....The one who strings the great bow of Lord Siva, could marry Sita !
On the previous day of wedding, beautiful Sita decided to go to temple with her friends to pray and just to have a look at the crowd of guests in a careless manner...She saw many faces...some looked proud..some cruel.....some timid ! Then she spotted Rama, the Crown Prince of Ayodhya- with a kind face.He looked as if he could care, share as well as be brave and strong !!!! Sita became sure that he would be the one who could string the bow !!!!
On the next day inside the marriage hall, princes came up turn by turn to lift the bow and string it.....But none could even lift the great bow of Siva !!!Lovely Sita in her wedding saree and with full of jewels and flowers was sitting in a corner, waiting breathlessly !!!! Then it was Rama's turn............He walked with grace, towards the bow...picked it with ease...but before stringing it the bow broke into two, due to the strength of his hands...Sita ran towards him and put her garland around his neck....................

A vibrant and colorful wedding image. Although it is an 'Indian Affair', this fabulous also conjures up a timeless scene across cultures and time, hinting of real and imaginary ancient kingdoms, like Atlantis, or perhaps the great Minoan civilization... :-)
