Description
Happy Lohri ! The wonderful Indian festival Lohri is celebrated in the month of January, which marks the end of winter season and the arrival of the pleasant harvest season. This festival is devoted to the fire and the Sun God.It symbolizes the fertility and warmth of the upcoming spring season. The fire lit at night of this festival is to beat the January chill and all villagers come and dance together offering till seeds, groundnut seeds etc to the fire God. This festival relieves the people from tensions of daily life and makes them feel relaxed. So, more than a religious festival,Lohri is considered as a social event. In the rural areas of Jammu and Punjab this festival is celebrated with great exuberance with a special dance called Chajja by villagers wearing colorful costumes and singing country music, using drums. As a preparation for the special day they collect logs, twigs and cow dung cakes in advance, for making the bonfire on the eve of Lohri. On that particular day, they exchange gifts and sweets to each other and dance in the moonlit light.
